Description
Letters of Rhythmic Violence is a series of drop caps illustrated with graphite on paper. It's unsettling flow invites viewers to lose themselves in the tension between its calm yet disquieting forms.
Process
I began by thumbnailing each letter losely with graphite on dotted paper. While designing the letters, I instilled the following parameters:
1. Principles of successful type design are to be followed despite being a handlettered project.
2. Rhythm and volume are the prominent elements.
3. It's forms are indicitive of organic matter, such as plants and people.
4. Swashes and other decorative motifs are to be utilized with consideration of legability.
5. Each letter should feel as if they are in equillibrium.
After finalizing my thumbnail, I moved onto the a larger piece of paper and started drawing. I layed out basic guidelines such as the baseline, cap height, and ascender height line. I referenced Ken Barber's "House Industries Lettering Manual" and Bruce W. & Nolen Strals "Lettering & Type" as guides for type anatomy.
